Requirements for Cable and Route Design Submissions

Issue 2.1, Feb 2009 · FTN D&D specs & typical drawings

Defines the format and minimum contents of an FTN cable and route design submission (design pack): title page, SLD, schedules, splicing diagram, BoQ, concessions, Form C1. Used by designers assembling a pack and by checkers reviewing one.

Clause map — what each clause deals with

1IntroductionBackground to the FTN programme and how survey output feeds the detailed design.
2ScopeDefines format and minimum inclusions of a submission; does not say how to design.
3AbbreviationsAbbreviations used (ADM, ATEH, BoQ, BT, CRE, DRE, MLOR, PDR, PMux, RC, RR, SLD, STM, WHD, ZHLS).
4GlossaryDefines the design roles (Designer, Checker, Reviewer, Approver), submission, copper section and half section, BT/RC vs rail return, parallelism, red bond, touch potential, tunnel repeater.
5GeneralDesign submissions per contiguous line of route between nodes, one approved design per section, adjoining design references, page numbering, hard and soft copy format.
6The Content of Design SubmissionsThe master list of sections every submission must contain, and Network Rail's right to ask for more detail.
6.1Title PageTitle page fields: line of route, limits by node short code, DS-(XXXX)-(YYYY) reference with alphabetical ordering, issue/draft numbering rules, names and signatures.
6.2Contents PageEach section listed with page number, preferred order.
6.3Introduction and PrécisScene-setting section: general information (nodes, distances, electrification, cable type, survey date), existing route characteristics, design summary (route and cable types, diversity, hazards, fragile cables).
6.4Design AssumptionsRecord any assumptions or decisions beyond the standard design rules.
6.5Location MapsMaps from UK level down to 1:25,000 detail showing each node and local features.
6.6Straight Line DrawingPurpose and file format of the SLD, the full list of permanent way, signalling, electrification, existing and proposed features to show, colours and title block.
6.7Transmission Design InformationPrécis of the transmission design, its line diagram and document references, plus LPDO supplementary info.
6.8PDR and Engineering ClearanceStatus of property development rights approval and the current MLOR spreadsheet.
6.9Design ConcessionsEvery departure from the cable and route specs needs a concession per QM/WI/028; include all applications and a status summary.
6.10Survey notesInclude the SP/FTN(SU)/001 survey notes with a line of route drawing.
6.11PhotographsPhoto format, unique identification, copyright, and the guide list of features that should be photographed.
6.12Bill of QuantitiesBoQ split into free-issue and constructor-supplied items, correlating with the survey; designer owns accuracy.
6.13Copper DetailsCopper cable schedule fields (meterage, pairs, conductor, sheath, lengths, allowances), distribution cabinet schedule (type, location, handrails, FTE, bonding, civils, services, verticals), copper joint locations.
6.14Fibre Cable DetailsFibre main and spur cable schedules with allowances, fibre joint schedule (ID, closure, kits, type, housing, location), termination schedule, sheath gap schedule, node MDF details.
6.15Fibre Splicing DiagramWhat the splicing diagram must show: cable/joint/termination IDs, joint types incl. backsplice, tube and fibre allocations, distances, drawing block, loss budget, network and user designations.
6.16Screening Conductor DetailsScreening conductor length schedule with allowance and size, joint locations and earth tap points, earth schedule (existing or new).
6.17Physical Diversity RequirementsPer-node diversity diagram: node reference, track layout, all crossing points, cable routing and entries, rings supported.
6.18Structural scheduleSchedule of retaining walls, platforms, manholes, UTXs, crossings, URXs with location and Form A&B flag.
6.19Manhole schedulesPer-manhole developed-wall diagram showing nearest track, all entries, and pipe allocation (FTN, blocked, spare).
6.20Designer's Risk AssessmentsSite-specific risks not covered by generic assessments.
6.21Tunnel Information (Cable Provision)Complete the Appendix B pro-forma for each tunnel.
6.22Certificate of Compliance (Design Requirements): Form C1Form C1 signed by the CRE confirming the design is compliant, checked and approved.
7Reference DocumentationLists SP/FTN(SU)/001, SP/FTN(D&D)/004, 005, 006, 008, 009, 016, 017.
