Specification for As-Built Records for Cables and Cable Route

Issue 4.1, Feb 2010 · FTN D&D specs & typical drawings

Sets out the data fields the As-Built spreadsheet must hold for every FTN cable, joint, termination, cabinet, screening conductor and route element, and which phase (survey, design, construction) fills them. Used by surveyors, designers and routeworks contractors.

Clause map — what each clause deals with

1IntroductionWhy completed-state records of FTN cables and routes are needed for condition monitoring and maintenance.
2AbbreviationsAbbreviations used (ATEH, DBS, DI-SAC, ELR, GLT, MP, OSGR, OHLE, SC, UTX, URX, WHD).
3GlossaryDefines the roles (Surveyor, Designer, Constructor), Design Submission, up/down direction, feature, route section, route transition, track offset, green zone.
4ScopeWhat the cable and route As-Built record covers and what is handled elsewhere (nodes, data system, circuit allocation).
5ApproachPhased data entry into one spreadsheet (survey, design, construction), colour-coded fields, who owns correctness at submission, the four end uses of the record.
5.1Network MaintenanceWhat maintainers need from the record (fast identification, location, element details).
5.2Network ManagementWhat network managers need (routing, capacity use and availability).
5.3Network ProvisioningWhat circuit provisioning needs, including spotting diverse-route conflicts.
5.4Network GrowthWhat network growth planning needs; data fields in section 6 are built to satisfy 5.1 to 5.4.
5.5Accuracy of OSGRsRequired digit resolution for eastings and northings, how to pad GPS readings and the accuracy penalty of placeholder zeros.
5.6Accuracy of Measurements Using ELR ReferencesHow to express ELR chainage: metres from the nearest quarter milepost in the up direction, positive integers.
6Capture of Data on Network ElementsWho enters what (surveyor red fields, designer green), spreadsheet unique reference and version format, management of a single live spreadsheet, Excel format, field naming convention.
6.1Optical Fibre Cable LengthsFields per joint-to-joint fibre cable length: ID, make-up, refractive index, end joint/termination IDs, manufacturer, sheath number, armour, sheath type, installer, dates, test report. DI-SAC handling.
6.2Optical Fibre JointsFields per fibre joint: ID, tray counts, tubes spliced/through/spurred, splicing drawing, closure type, OSGR, ELR, track offset, dimensions, position, dates, green zone, nearest access point.
6.3Optical Fibre Spur Cable LengthFields per spur cable length, same as 6.1 plus the ID of the joint it spurs from.
6.4Optical Fibre TerminationsHow termination IDs are formed from node ID plus letter; fields for cables terminated, tray counts, all fibres terminated, type, dimensions, position, dates.
6.5Copper Cable LengthsFields per copper cable length: ID, end node/cabinet/joint IDs, pairs, conductor diameter, manufacturer, sheath, armour, position, installer, dates, test report.
6.6Copper JointsCJ-nnnnnn ID format from a Network Rail allocated range, then fields: OSGR, ELR, host cable ID, pairs, closure type, offset, dimensions, position, dates, test report.
6.7Copper stub lengthFields per copper stub cable length, mirroring 6.5 with termination/joint IDs at each end.
6.8Copper TerminationsCopper termination IDs from cabinet/node ID plus vertical letter; fields for cables terminated, termination type, accommodation, rig drawing, dates, test report.
6.9Distribution CabinetsFields per distribution cabinet: ID, termination IDs, circuits, repeater housings, model, OSGR, ELR, offset, dimensions, position, dates, schematic drawing, green zone, nearest access point.
6.10Screening ConductorFields per screening conductor: ID, manufacturer, conductor size, position, installer, dates, test report.
6.11Screening Conductor JointsFields per screening conductor joint: OSGR, ELR, type, offset, dimensions, position, dates, green zone, green zone access, nearest access point.
6.12Screening Conductor EarthsFields per screening earth: ID, parent conductor ID, number of rods or other configuration, offset, position, dates, green zone, access.
6.13Cable RouteRoute-section and feature model, RS/MH/RJ/TP/LL ID formats with contract-area digits, lid lift concept. Route recording withdrawn this issue; text kept greyed.
6.13.1Route SectionsFields per route section: end feature IDs, cables, position, route type, material, size, offset, contractor, date, drawing, UTX/URX duct counts and condition.
6.13.2Lid Lift pointsFields per lid lift point (every 100 m per SP/FTN(SU)/001): spare capacity estimate, OSGR, ELR, offset, position.
6.13.3ManholesFields per manhole: dimensions, material, ducts in/out, OSGR, ELR, position, application, lid safe load, date built, green zone, access, hazards, nearest access point.
6.13.4Route Transition PointFields per route transition: application (type/size change), spare capacity in the smaller route, position, OSGR, ELR, offset.
6.13.5Route JunctionFields per route junction: spare capacity in the smaller route, position, OSGR, ELR, offset.
6.14Double-Insulated Super Armoured Cable (DI-SAC)How DI-SAC lengths are recorded (SF fields mirroring fibre cable lengths), when route records still apply, supersedes FTN/HQ/SP/1001; several fields removed.
6.15DI-SAC Anchor PointsOnly anchor points next to each milepost or quarter milepost are recorded: ID, ELR/MP, track offset to one decimal, track detail per Sectional Appendix.
6.16Directly Buried Sub-ductRequirement withdrawn.
6.17Directly Buried Sub-duct Anchor PointsRequirement withdrawn.
