What is an REB?
At a glance
A small prefabricated building beside the line that houses telecoms and signalling equipment. In FTN terms it's often an access node site.
Why: Equipment needs a secure, powered, weatherproof home near the track. How cables get into it (cable type, length inside, screening conductor) is tightly ruled.
Where: At node sites along the route. Fibre usually reaches it by a spur; PE cable may only run a limited distance inside before ZHLS is needed.
Where the rules are
- NR/L2/TEL/30160 cl 7.7.1adding an access node (REB, cabinet, ATEH) to an existing cable
- NR/L2/TEL/30160 cl 6.9.2how far PE cable may run into an REB
- NR/L3/TEL/30108 cl 5.3.7cables entering buildings — no screening conductor inside
- NR/L3/TEL/30162 cl 6.6gapping the armour before a building entry
