What is a joint bay?

At a glance

A widened spot or pit off the main cable route where a cable joint closure sits, with room for the spare cable loop needed to make and re-make the joint.

Why: Joints need slack cable and a safe, protected place clear of the main route so they can be worked on without disturbing the cables running through.

Where: At each straight or spur joint position, sited outside the main route. DI-SAC routes have their own joint bay arrangements.
