SP FTN (D&D) 011

Optical Fibre Terminations and Accessories

Issue 2, Jul 2003 · FTN D&D specs & typical drawings

Product spec for the FTN's optical termination kit: termination trays, uniters, patchcord management, cable manifolds and the rack, wall-box and free-standing housings they fit in. Designers use it to understand ODF capacity, tray rules and the space allowed in trackside housings and REBs.

Clause map — what each clause deals with

1IntroductionBackground: the new FTN supporting GSM-R and operational circuits.
2AbbreviationsAcronyms (ETSI, MBR, MTBF, REB, SU, ZHLS).
3GlossaryDefinitions of Access/Core Node, trackside housing, patchcord, pigtail and optical termination.
4ScopeCovers termination components; patchcords and pigtails are in SP/FTN(D&D)/012.
5Optical Termination RequirementsWhat an optical termination comprises (trays, superstructure, patchcords, pigtails, manifolds) and the 6x4 fibre cable it terminates.
6Optical Fibre Termination TraysTray requirements: fibre bend radius control, protection and cover, storage capacity, splice protectors and capacity, fibre entry and transport tubes, ports, uniters, labelling, laser warnings.
7Optical ConnectorsConnector types on pigtails and ruggedised patchcords (tuned SC/APC and FC/PC) to IEC standards.
8Optical UnitersUniter design for connector mating, vibration resistance, dust caps and cleaning instructions.
9Optical Patchcord ManagementWhat patchcord management must achieve: bend radius, no traction or torsion, tidy routing.
10Termination Tray InclusionsTrays come with four SC/APC uniters and cleaning instructions; pre-loaded pigtails optional.
11Size of Termination (Compactness)Space constraints for terminations in access nodes.
11.1Optical Terminations in Active Trackside Equipment HousingsRack space allowed in a trackside housing, fibre and cable capacity, 4 fibres per tray, and an indicative cabinet layout.
11.2Optical Terminations in Access Nodes and Core Nodes in REBsWall-mounted cabinet requirements in REBs: glanding, cable diameters, wall space available, fibre capacity, working height and door lock.
12Identification and LabellingTermination identifier label format and clip-on collets for tube numbering.
13Termination MountingThe three mounting formats (ETSI rack sub-frame, wall cabinet, free-standing rack) and their environmental classes.
14ExtendabilityModular design so more tubes can be terminated later without disturbing live fibres.
15Cable ManifoldsManifold role: terminate inner sheath and clamp the CSM while passing fibres to trays; armour sealed with heatshrink before entry.
16EnvironmentEnvironmental classes the equipment must withstand.
17Product Acceptance and Supporting InformationProduct acceptance status, railway use history, MTBF data and 30-year material life.
